Dr. David F. Marley, attending urological surgeon at Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas, stated at the 89th annual American Urological Association meeting in 1994 that he had found the drug Doxazosin (Cardura, manufactured by Pfizer) to be safe and effective.

Cardura is designed to relax small muscles in the arteries and thus lower blood pressure, effectively relaxing the prostate. It is now FDA-approved. In about a third of cases studied, Cardura dramatically improved the flow rate of urine and significantly decreased symptoms such as urgency and frequency. One side effect: 15 percent of the men experienced dizziness and vertigo.

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) recently published clinical practice guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of BPH. The AHCPR guidelines listed alpha-blockers, including Doxazosin, as effective treatments for this common condition.
